Common Acne Myths

Acne is caused by poor hygiene

Acne is not caused by poor hygiene. While keeping the skin clean is important, acne is primarily caused by a combination of factors such as hormonal changes, genetics, increased oil production, and the presence of bacteria on the skin. Over-washing or scrubbing the skin excessively can actually irritate the skin and worsen acne.

Greasy foods cause acne

There is no clear scientific evidence that links greasy or fried foods to acne. Acne is primarily influenced by hormonal factors and genetics, not diet. However, a healthy diet that includes a variety of nutrients can contribute to overall skin health.

Only people with oily skin get acne

Acne can affect people with all skin types, including those with dry, normal, or combination skin. While excessive oil production is one factor that can contribute to acne, other factors such as hormonal changes, genetics, and skin care products can also play a role. Acne treatment should be tailored to an individual's skin type and specific needs.

Sun exposure clears up acne

While sun exposure may initially seem to improve acne due to its anti-inflammatory effects and temporary drying of the skin, prolonged sun exposure can actually worsen acne in the long run. Sun exposure can lead to skin damage, increased oil production, and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (dark spots) that can make acne scars more noticeable.

Exfoliating the skin regularly is good for acne

Over-exfoliating or using harsh exfoliants can actually irritate the skin and worsen acne. Scrubbing the skin too vigorously or using abrasive exfoliants can lead to inflammation and potential breakouts.

It is fine to pop your pimples

Popping pimples is not recommended as it can actually make acne worse. Picking or popping pimples can lead to inflammation, scarring, and the spread of bacteria, which can cause more breakouts. It's best to leave pimples alone and seek professional acne treatment from a qualified skincare professional.

Accutane is unsafe

When indicated, Accutane is very safe and very effective for certain patterns of acne. Accutane can also have a “curative” effect for certain patterns of acne and can provide great confidence for patients to have clear skin! All providers at MSFM are Accutane providers and are happy to help you achieve clear skin.
